Cannon Design in the community: The Future of the Walk and Doors Open

Hi all:

Last Friday Carla and I participated in an interesting design charrette curated by Ruth Spitzer, called “The Future of the Walk”.  It was an experiential, visioning charrette, part of a series called “The Future of Mobility” hosted by the Goethe Institute.  Armed with curious props, we had many excellent intersections with a diverse group (including professors from Ryerson and OCAD - potential clients!) about walkability, strolling for enjoyment versus striding to a destination, etc.  As architects, Carla and I spoke about the influence that walkability has on urban form, how pedestrian culture has evolved, and also our own experiences in cities where walking is, let’s just say…, challenging.  The series still has a couple of events worth exploring: http://www.goethe.de/ins/ca/tor/ver/en8822255v.htm

The best part about all this is that the group is really intrigued by our Doors Open event, and we hope that several of them will drop in over the weekend with their friends and colleagues.  Carla has shared our blog with them and we’ve had a very enthusiastic response.  Here’s to  Doors Open being a huge success… Spread the word!

To relate all this to some of the ideas touched upon this week – about being perceived as a creative firm, as designers and ideas-based-professionals – let’s all get out there and be part of the broader design community in TO, build relationships with like-minded persons, prospective clients and collaborators, and invite them to have a dialogue with us.  (I for one am already picturing an open Pecha Kucha event, perhaps as a follow up to our Doors Open investigations – open to potential clients and collaborators…)

What do you think?
